The Times – Term 1 Issue 1 2025

Welcome everyone to the 2025 school year. A warm welcome to all the new students and staff members who have joined our school community. We look forward to working with you and sharing in your successes at Pascoe Vale Girls College. Our School Council has strong parent representation, and I thank those parents who have made this commitment to the school. The school council will continue be updated regarding the education plan for Merri-bek North with a project officer working across the four schools. The success of joint provision with VCE Sociology has now extended from Units 1 and 2 to Units 3 and 4 and there are additional opportunities on offer for students and staff to collaborate across the schools. Our project officer has also provided an update in this newsletter. 

We have enjoyed a very productive term one. This first edition of the newsletter highlights the opportunities that are provided to students to learn, explore, participate, and achieve in all dimensions of secondary school.  It has been so pleasing to see students engaged in their learning, taking on leadership and participating in the rich extracurricular program. Year 7 students have settled in well with school events providing opportunities for students to connect with peers and staff and students from other year levels. The inaugural Year 12 camp was incredibly valuable to support student wellbeing and set student focus for the year ahead. 

International Women’s Day is a significant event for the college with guest speakers speaking at assemblies and student leaders being presented to sub schools. Our student leaders are named in the newsletter. The student leadership program at the college is diverse and creates a platform for student voice and agency that we value and acknowledge at the school. 

The development of a positive climate for learning is a priority at the college which this year has been strengthened through the continued implementation of Classroom Mastery and programs to enhance student engagement and connectedness. Classroom Mastery provides leaders and teachers with the knowledge, skills and strategies they need to create classroom behaviours and school culture that foster positive learning environments for all students. The program has supported the development of a consistently productive, safe and calm learning environment at the college. Student engagement and connectedness has been fostered through programs such as Year 8 Explore and Year 9 Engagement, Connecting and Belonging. Feedback regarding these programs has been very positive with students being more focused and enjoying the breadth of the curriculum on offer. Year 10 Work experience has been renewed for 2025 and VCE VM students are currently seeking work placements to add to their portfolios. 

Our expanded Wellbeing team is now available to support students regarding academic, emotional, and social development with links to a range of external support agencies to further support students. 

We encourage parents and guardians to stay actively involved in their child’s education. Your support and participation are invaluable in creating a positive learning environment. Please contact Middle or Senior School regarding your child’s progress or if you wish to discuss wellbeing related concerns. 

It was very encouraging to see so many parents and students in discussions with teachers at conferences this term. We hope all students and parents have utilised the feedback provided to guide conversations regarding achievement and improvement for learning growth. For parents of Year 7 and 9 students, NAPLAN results for 2025 are expected to be released in August 2025, with individual student reports sent to schools around that time.

I wish all families a safe, happy, and restful break. As we prepare for Term 2, let’s carry forward the lessons learned, and the successes achieved during Term 1. Together, we will continue to strive for excellence and create a nurturing environment where every student can thrive.

Allan Thomson Environment scholarships 

Congratulations to the following students who were awarded the Allan Thomson Environment Scholarship for 2025: Hafssa Rafea, Aliza Zahra, Aaliya Memon, Aamna Memon, Jaismeen Mangrha, Aiman Khan and Marya Issa. All these students were able to clearly articulate their views regarding the impact of pollution on our oceans and what can be done to protect this valuable resource.

It has been wonderful to see our Year 7, 8 and Year 9 students beginning the school year with such enthusiasm. There are many opportunities awaiting our students this year. These include a variety of excursions and incursions as well as school wide college events which are planned throughout the year to enrich school life at our college.

Term 1 is the perfect opportunity to remind our Middle School community of a few expectations ensuring the continuation of a flawless start to the school year. 

• Students need to be at their lockers by 8.30am every morning organising themselves for the day. Classes begin at 8.45am.
• Please provide an absence note or a note on Compass explaining your daughter’s absence or if they arrive late to school. If you need assistance logging onto Compass please contact the General Office.
• Full school uniform is to be worn everyday. PE uniform can only be worn when PE classes are scheduled for your child on the day.

Year 8 Investigating Deep Time 

In Term 1 some Year 8 students were invited to participate in an archaeological dig at Como House in South Yarra. The following week they recorded a podcast about their experience. They worked with other Year 8 students from Glenroy and John Fawkner College as part of a Merri-bek initiative to connect the schools.

Year 8 Explore

This year we have introduced Year 8 electives for students to ‘Explore’ different areas of art and technology. Explore classes take place once a week. Students have chosen from the following subjects:

• Ceramics
• Design
• Performing Arts
• Sewing
• Wood

Year 9 EBC Day

This year we have introduced a new initiative especially for Year 9s – EBC days. EBC stands for Engagement, Belonging and Connection. Once per term all Year 9 students will participate in one of the activities offered on the EBC day. The activities are designed to engage and provide opportunities for Year 9 students to be involved in new experiences and connect with the community and their peers. 

On Wednesday 5th March we held our first Year 9 EBC day with students choosing from the following:

• STEM Centre of Excellence workshops at the Melbourne Science Gallery
• Islamic Museum of Australia in Thornbury
• Aged Care volunteer at Dorothy Impey, Pascoe Vale South & Plumpton Villa, Glenroy
• Primary school volunteer at Pascoe Vale North Primary School
• PVGC art project – mosaics

From all reports, the students had a great day at their chosen activity and attendance and engagement on the day was high.

“I loved the stories of the residents. They were so cheeky! I loved Mary telling her romance story.”

“Most children were very excitable and some were easily distracted. When we were able to help them stay on track it was very satisfying. Answering all of their silly questions was quite entertaining.”

“I loved going to the museum. It was interesting as they had a lot of cool artifacts. I learnt a lot and would recommend coming here.”

In Term 2 the EBC day will be on Friday 2nd May (week 2). Some of the activities will be repeated as well as some other options. They are:

Celebration Assemblies

Term 1 at Pascoe Vale Girls College has been a busy and exciting time for our Senior School students, marked by a range of enriching events and activities. Year 10 students have settled into the Senior School, adjusting to their new academic and social environment with enthusiasm. 

One of the standout moments for our Year 12 cohort was the presentation of their new hoodies and jackets on the first day back after the holidays. This new initiative provided a symbol of pride and unity for the Year 12 students as they embarked on their final year at the college. 

The Year 12 Vocational Major (VM) students also organised a successful Valentine’s Day Bake Sale, showcasing their entrepreneurial skills and raising funds for future school activities. The Year 11 students had the chance to explore higher education pathways during an excursion to RMIT University, gaining valuable insights into university life. 

The Year 11 VM students also enjoyed an exciting Formula One excursion, where they saw firsthand the connection between their vocational studies and the world of motorsports. Additionally, Year 12 VM students participated in a rewarding Community Day at Glenroy Secondary College, where they worked together to build shelters. 

The term concluded with the Year 12 students celebrating the Iftar Dinner Night, an important cultural event that brought the school community together in a spirit of unity and reflection.

Overall, Term 1 has been a successful and engaging start to the year, filled with learning, growth, and connection.

First Day of Year 12

The first day of Year 12 was an action packed and memorable day for the Year 12’s. The day started off with an assembly where the Year 7 and 12’s were introduced to our new school Captains (Alina, Meharpreet and Elise).  It was amazing being able to see the new additions and faces to our wonderful school.

It was exciting to come back and see everyone after such a long time, all our friends and teachers and to be able to see our new classes. The first day of year 12, being our First Last Day of high school, was an equally exciting and scary feeling for everyone. It symbolised a new chapter in our lives, of our last year before leaving high school and choosing our life paths. It also symbolised the near end of our school journey and the significance of our years here at Pascoe Vale Girls College.

It was an unforgettable moment receiving our Year 12 hoodies and jackets at lunch and there was an unexplainable excitement in the air. It was overall an extremely exciting and memorable day for all year 12 students. A day that we will truly never forget and that we will always cherish forever.

Friday Funday – Volleyball Game

A spectacular and thrilling game of volleyball took place on Friday, the 21st of February, between the teachers and senior school students of PVGC. It was a very successful event hosted for the second Friday Funday of this year. With a very supportive audience of students, the game was filled with fierce competition, and there were certainly moments when the crowd nervously held their breath! Both teams played to the best of their ability, and along with the competitiveness, we hope that it was enjoyable for all the players and viewers. The senior school students made us proud, displaying great sportsmanship and teamwork throughout the game. We hope to see more participation in the future from our wonderful students and teachers, and we look forward to holding more Friday Fundays to bring an equal level of excitement!

Friday Funday – Karaoke

On the 7th of February in Gold Week, Karaoke was hosted within the Auditorium. It was great to see all year levels attending and enjoying the Karaoke that was planned by Mr Nichols and the Senior School team, especially the Seniors who provided a fun and exciting environment. It was an excellent way to break off from the stress of VCE and it was amazing to see so many positive reactions to the first Friday Funday of the year. Great to see the energy that was displayed during the Karaoke!

RMIT “I Belong” Excursion

On the 5th of March, the year 11 cohort got the opportunity to visit RMIT University to experience the life of a university student! By dividing into several groups, the students were able to learn about lectures, possible careers pathways and jobs for the future! RMIT university students were open to answering any questions we had regarding life after secondary school, which provided students with a greater understanding of how to approach and deal with university. For students who were uncertain about the career they wanted to pursue, the university opened their minds to many more career options that were not well known. The presentations throughout the day were very engaging and kept all the students on their toes by encouraging them to answer questions and participate in group discussions. The highlight of the day was the exciting RMIT quiz at the end of the session, where students received the chance to win a prize if their group successfully answered the majority of the questions. This day was certainly enjoyable for the year 11s, as well as enlightening about university life on campus!

Year 12 – La Trobe Excursion

On Friday 26th April, the year 12 VCE students visited La Trobe University in Bundoora to get some firsthand information on university life.

The day was divided up into 4 sessions.

Session 1 & 4 was presentations by La Trobe University all about university life and programs they offer.

Session 2 began with PVGC students dividing into 4 groups.  We first did a tour of the university and ended up with a presentation by a faculty member.  The areas covered:

• Health – Health Information Management
• Business- Business Finance – Trading Room
• Science – Prosthetics and Orthotic’s
• Science – Optometry

Session 3 was lunch and free roaming of the university.

This excursion was very informative and gave us the opportunity to see a university in action.  La Trobe is a very community based, relaxing, environmentally friendly university.

Friendship Day – Cowan and Alberti House

This term, Cowan and Alberti House teamed together to hold Friendship Day. Lunchtime was filled with activities that contributed to the school’s ongoing effort to create a sense of community and friendship. One of the highlights of the day was the Polaroid Booth! Students had the chance to capture fun moments with their friends and it was the perfect keepsake. It was heartwarming to see so many smiles and laughter as students posed with their friends. In addition, students had the opportunity to express their creativity with chalk drawing! The quadrangle was vibrant with artwork that reflected friendship and kindness. They definitely added a cheerful and artistic vibe. There was also a card making stall! Students could write thoughtful messages to their friends that would later be sent to recipients’ classrooms. It was perfect for students to actively engage in spreading friendship. Overall, Friendship Day was a huge success! Cowan and Alberti house are grateful for everyone who participated and made the event come to life and so special. It was great to see student’s connecting and celebrating with their friends. There are definitely more Friendship days planned… so keep an eye out!

Netball round robin – Wake House

On 3rd March,2025, the Wake leadership team organised an exciting netball event on the outdoor netball courts. The day was graced with sunny, yet refreshing weather, creating the perfect atmosphere for participants and spectators alike. The amazing conditions added to the energy and enthusiasm of the event, making it a delightful and memorable experience. The highlight of the day was the exceptional performance by the senior students, who showcased their skills brilliantly and won. The lively atmosphere and spirited play made the event truly memorable for everyone involved.

Mindful Colouring – Wake House

The Wake House Captains hosted a creative mindful colouring session to wrap up the term with warmth and tranquillity. Students came together with enthusiasm, engaging in vibrant conversations and laughter while creating beautiful artwork. The session offered a much-needed opportunity to unwind, fostering a sense of community and relaxation. It was a joyful and peaceful way to end the term, leaving everyone with smiles and a renewed sense of calm.

St John’s Ambulance 

Term 1 has started spectacularly for our St John Ambulance members. 

We began the term by encouraging students to get involved and develop essential life-saving skills. CPR Lab partnered with us to train 202 students in the DRSABCD action plan and CPR—an outstanding achievement. We are sincerely grateful to everyone who participated. Students also had the unique opportunity to explore a St John vehicle and practice manoeuvring a stretcher, making the experience even more engaging and interactive. A special thank you to Aminah, Chiara and Lauren who helped make this event run so smoothly. 

Our members have been working hard this term learning the fundamentals including DRSABCD, choking first aid, wounds and bleeding, sprains, strains, fractures and dislocations and bites and stings. They have expanded their knowledge practising their patient assessment including a gathering a history, a secondary assessment and obtaining vital signs including a pulse and a respiratory rate.

PVGC Debating

The PVGC A Grade Debating team has had a successful start to this year’s Debating Association of Victoria’s Schools competition. There are five rounds of preliminary debates, with successful teams progressing to the finals later this year. 

On our first night at Coburg High School we argued as the affirmative team against Coburg High that ‘all pharmaceutical research should be funded and conducted by the government’. After a hard fought battle we emerged as the very relieved winning team. 

Round 2 promised to be a tough matchup against old rivals Northcote High School. We argued as the negative team against the proposition that we should hold company directors & CEOs criminally responsible for security breaches’. Northcote came out strong with a number of strong arguments, but PVGC stood our ground, affirmed our position and successfully rebutted our opponents arguments! Win 2 from 2! 

PVGC A Grade team is now looking forward to securing more wins as the secret topic debates start in Term 2!

Student Leadership Summit

On Wednesday the 12th of March, Mrs Ferguson, 2 College Captains (Alina Veskovic and Meharpreet Kaur) and the 2 Senior School Captains (Marlize Aitu and Samaosama Alhasani) attended a Student Leadership Summit at Brunswick Secondary College.

Upon arriving, we were greeted by a variety of students with different leadership positions from schools such as Glenroy College, Strathmore Secondary College, Preston High School, Princes Hill Secondary College and more. 

We started the day off with team introductions and we were encouraged to talk more about how our house systems and leadership runs within each school, especially the variety of leadership roles available across all year levels. 

For the rest of our time at the summit we were split around with one student representative from each school at different tables. We then started discussing ways we could improve our schools, whether that be through special Events such as Swimming Carnival, Athletics Carnival or the celebration of International Women’s Day, or through the use of media such as Instagram and Facebook pages. Leaders were encouraged to discuss and write down ideas and solutions, either what actions schools have already taken, or what steps they could take towards building a better school.

Finally, at the end, 2-3 representatives from each table came up to the stage in order to share the ideas that they had from their groups, so that way each leader within the room could have an idea on how the school could be improved or even changed.

Just a big thank you to Mrs Ferguson for personally driving us, the leaders, to and from the event and a shout out to Brunswick Secondary College for inviting and hosting such an important event where we could come and work together as a collective. It was a very valuable experience and something that we won’t be forgetting anytime soon.

International Women’s Day

At Pascoe Vale Girls College, we were very happy and privileged to host International Women’s Day this year on Friday the 7th of March. It is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, while also serving as a call to action for accelerating gender parity and women’s rights. 

In order to receive more insight on the success and hardships faced by women, both Middle and Senior School Students had the pleasure of listening to the life stories of two fascinating and successful women (past-PVGC students) which took place during 2nd period for Middle School and 4th period for Senior School. They talked us through their experiences, from the hardships and adversities they faced, to the victories they celebrated. 

During this time, we also had the absolute pleasure of welcoming and introducing all the 2025 senior school leaders. We had various students come up to shake hands with the speaker and receive their certificate with beaming smiles on their faces.

In order to celebrate this event, a lunchtime carnival was held where leaders were able to create their own stalls selling their own items. These stalls included events such as ‘Guess how many lollies in the lolly Jar?’, ‘Guess what song it is?’, ‘Beanbag toss’, ‘Face painting’, ‘Cup Stacking’ and much more that many students enjoyed. Many students as well as teachers enjoyed themselves at the Carnival which was incredible to see. 

A big thank you to Ms Ferguson for all the planning and effort it took into making all this possible, from the speakers to the stalls. Also a big thank you to the Leaders who also put in a lot of effort into making different but really enjoyable stalls for the students and teachers to have fun.

Student Leadership Day

On the 10th of February, Pascoe Vale Girls College was very excited to hold Leadership Day. It was a day for PVGC Leaders to come together to share their ideas and to communicate with each other on yearly events.

During the first 2 periods of the day, leaders were formally introduced to each other and were able to receive their gifts which were personally made by Ms Ferguson. Students started by playing people bingo which included us walking around and conversing with other leaders. This helped us to make new friends and speak to new people.

After that, we then began to brainstorm and plan important events such as International Women’s Day and other yearly events. Towards the end of day, the leaders played team building activities which were conducted by our 3 School Captains (Alina, Meharpreet and Elise). This day was very good for us to build leadership skills and get to know each other. We look forward to hosting more events this year.

Art Club

Whether through painting, drawing, or digital art, we, the Art Club captains, strive to create a welcoming space where students of all artistic abilities can freely express themselves and grow as artists. Our school is home to many talented students, and we’ve been working with them to bring Art Club to life. More than just a club, it’s a creative community where students come together to share ideas and produce amazing art.

Asma, a dedicated member of Art Club, shares her thoughts: “Art Club isn’t just about art—it’s also about teamwork, inspiration, and making new friends who love being creative and artistic in their own unique ways.” This perfectly reflects the heart of Art Club—a supportive environment where students inspire one another, learn new techniques, and form meaningful friendships.

Sama also shared her perspective: “Art Club is a way we can all stand together as artists and merge our talent together as one.“ While art is often seen as an individualistic thing, PVGC’s Art Club fosters collaboration. Our members work hard to create beautiful arts and crafts projects that celebrate the diversity of artistic expression and highlight the positive values of our school. From group projects to themed art challenges, the club encourages teamwork and the blending of different styles.

This term, we’ve focused on welcoming new members and creating a space where both experienced and beginner artists feel comfortable expressing themselves. Whether students create art for fun or pursue it more seriously, Art Club is a place where creativity thrives without judgment. We started the term by designing new postcards for the school, and now, we’re making our own creations to sell at Art Club’s first fundraiser next term  to support future Art Club activities. We’re excited to see what the future holds for our talented Art Club members!

Year 12 – Yayoi Kusama Exhibition Excursion

 Hellenic Museum Excursion

On Monday 17th March, the Year 10 Mythology class travelled to the Hellenic Museum to explore the heroes and monsters of Ancient Greek myths. Students examined how heroes like Odysseus and Perseus confronted perilous quests, vengeful deities such as Zeus and Poseidon, terrifying monsters like the Scylla, the Cyclopes, and the  gorgon Medusa. Students journeyed to the Underworld and found Iris at the River Styx. 

We handled exciting historical artefacts like vases, battle armour, coins over 2,000 years old, and considered how ongoing archaeological research helps us to better understand the views and values of past societies. Most interestingly, we asked ourselves how myths like those told in Homer’s epics can be validated by certain discoveries. We also designed our own Ancient Greek terracotta pottery inspired by mythological creatures and heroes fused with our likeness. Well done to all students in attendance for representing our school with pride. A big thank you to the staff at the Hellenic Museum, including our program coordinator Jo and our wonderful guide Bridget for a fantastic day.

Yakult Factory Excursion 

I’m really glad our composite year 11 and 12 Japanese class went to the Yakult Factory. Surprisingly, it’s the only manufacturer that produces Yakult for all of Australia and even distributes it to New Zealand! 

We learnt a lot about the business, product, and process behind it all, which intrigued me more than expected. While it held a great standard of professionalism, the factory was also really cute! 

Yakult means ‘yogurt like’, deriving from now-unspoken Esperanto language, created and named by scientist Minoru Shirota. Which, Shirota was a scientist who advocated his studies towards improving gut health, and developed Yakult by discovering the Lacticaseibacillus paracasei Shirota (LcS) strain bacteria. It’s a probiotic bacteria great for your gut!

Inside each bottle contains 6.5 billion live LcS bacteria, which sounds shocking but is perfectly the right daily dosage for adults and children. They showed us the different Yakult products available across the world in different flavours, sizes, and packaging! They’re currently testing cardboard packaging in countries like Denmark and Germany, while there are also Yakult flavours like grape, orange, and green apple sold in Singapore. We chose between trying an original bottle or the LIGHT version, which has 40% reduced calories and sugar content from using an alternative natural sweetener, stevia! After everything, we were even luckier to enjoy the evening having lunch at a local beach. The weather was so nice, being sunny and warm while the beach was quiet and gorgeously blue. It was an extremely exciting and enjoyable day. Thanks to Sensei and Ms Tuckerman for accompanying and appreciating the day with us!

Year 10 GTAC ‘Unlocking Cancer Research through Stem Cells’ Excursion

On March 14th, selected Yr. 10 students attended the Gene Technology Access Centre (GTAC) for the ‘Unlocking Cancer Research through Stem Cells’ Excursion, as part of the world celebrations for UniStem Day.

During this excursion, students learned about the ‘real science’ of stem cell research and what it holds for the future, including how the manufacture and use of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) supported future research and treatment of complex cancers.

Our students heard from young PhD students and post-graduate researchers from MCRI about their career pathways, the part of the blood or immune system they were studying, and how they hoped to help children with diseases such as leukemia, diabetes and brain tumours.

Students also participated in a series of hands-on activities to study blood development and diseases using stem cells; discussed the ethics surrounding stem cells, and explored how language, art and science merged to communicate these discoveries with the public.
