St John’s Ambulance 

Term 1 has started spectacularly for our St John Ambulance members. 

We began the term by encouraging students to get involved and develop essential life-saving skills. CPR Lab partnered with us to train 202 students in the DRSABCD action plan and CPR—an outstanding achievement. We are sincerely grateful to everyone who participated. Students also had the unique opportunity to explore a St John vehicle and practice manoeuvring a stretcher, making the experience even more engaging and interactive. A special thank you to Aminah, Chiara and Lauren who helped make this event run so smoothly. 

Our members have been working hard this term learning the fundamentals including DRSABCD, choking first aid, wounds and bleeding, sprains, strains, fractures and dislocations and bites and stings. They have expanded their knowledge practising their patient assessment including a gathering a history, a secondary assessment and obtaining vital signs including a pulse and a respiratory rate.

PVGC Debating

The PVGC A Grade Debating team has had a successful start to this year’s Debating Association of Victoria’s Schools competition. There are five rounds of preliminary debates, with successful teams progressing to the finals later this year. 

On our first night at Coburg High School we argued as the affirmative team against Coburg High that ‘all pharmaceutical research should be funded and conducted by the government’. After a hard fought battle we emerged as the very relieved winning team. 

Round 2 promised to be a tough matchup against old rivals Northcote High School. We argued as the negative team against the proposition that we should hold company directors & CEOs criminally responsible for security breaches’. Northcote came out strong with a number of strong arguments, but PVGC stood our ground, affirmed our position and successfully rebutted our opponents arguments! Win 2 from 2! 

PVGC A Grade team is now looking forward to securing more wins as the secret topic debates start in Term 2!

Student Leadership Summit

On Wednesday the 12th of March, Mrs Ferguson, 2 College Captains (Alina Veskovic and Meharpreet Kaur) and the 2 Senior School Captains (Marlize Aitu and Samaosama Alhasani) attended a Student Leadership Summit at Brunswick Secondary College.

Upon arriving, we were greeted by a variety of students with different leadership positions from schools such as Glenroy College, Strathmore Secondary College, Preston High School, Princes Hill Secondary College and more. 

We started the day off with team introductions and we were encouraged to talk more about how our house systems and leadership runs within each school, especially the variety of leadership roles available across all year levels. 

For the rest of our time at the summit we were split around with one student representative from each school at different tables. We then started discussing ways we could improve our schools, whether that be through special Events such as Swimming Carnival, Athletics Carnival or the celebration of International Women’s Day, or through the use of media such as Instagram and Facebook pages. Leaders were encouraged to discuss and write down ideas and solutions, either what actions schools have already taken, or what steps they could take towards building a better school.

Finally, at the end, 2-3 representatives from each table came up to the stage in order to share the ideas that they had from their groups, so that way each leader within the room could have an idea on how the school could be improved or even changed.

Just a big thank you to Mrs Ferguson for personally driving us, the leaders, to and from the event and a shout out to Brunswick Secondary College for inviting and hosting such an important event where we could come and work together as a collective. It was a very valuable experience and something that we won’t be forgetting anytime soon.
